The American Red Cross blood drive scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3. The Bloodmobile will be at our offices from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you had previously registered online to donate, you should have received a call informing you of the new date.
Even if you did not register for that date, the American Red Cross still needs you. In fact, the American Red Cross reports an urgent need for donors, as there have been about 80,000 fewer donations than expected since May. Just two extra donors per drive ensures that blood products are available for patients this summer.
Because the need is constant, Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics hosts at least two blood drives a year.
Blood is made up of three primary components for transfusion – red cells, platelets and plasma. Each component benefits a specific patient need. Today a premature baby may require type O negative red cells, while tomorrow a cancer patient may need type AB positive platelets.
Many surgical patients are not aware that they can donate their own blood ahead of surgery. Called an autologous donation, this procedure requires a physician prescription. If you are planning a procedure, talk to your doctor first to find out if you should donate blood for yourself.
