The recent tornadoes and severe weather in Arkansas serve as a reminder of the important work the American Red Cross does.
Because the need is always there, Arkansas Specialty Orthopaedics hosts at least two blood drives a year. Thursday, the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile at our offices from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment at www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: ASOLR.
The need for blood is constant and ever changing. Blood is made up of three primary components for transfusion – red cells, platelets and plasma. Each component benefits a specific patient need. Today a premature baby may require type O negative red cells, while tomorrow a cancer patient may need type AB positive platelets.
Many surgical patients are not aware that they can donate their own blood ahead of surgery. Called an autologous donation, this procedure requires a physician prescription. If you are planning a procedure, talk to your doctor first to find out if you should donate blood for yourself.
