4 Fitness Trends That Could Hurt You

The importance of an active lifestyle cannot be emphasized enough. Getting in shape by participating in the latest trends is common; however, Men’s Health recently warned its readers of four of 2015’s fitness trends that are best to avoid.

1. Going crazy on the gymnastics rings.

A recent report from the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine suggested that, among gymnastic movements, ring routines are the toughest on your shoulders. Not ideal since your shoulder is the most flexible joint in your body.

Dips especially put your joint in compromising positions that can easily tear your rotator cuff. If you decide to perform dips, it is recommended to do so in a slow, controlled manner.

2. Kipping Pull-ups

Why? As you can see in the image above, this exercise involves a lot of excessive leg and lower spine movement as well as unwanted forces on your shoulder.

3. Running Too Much

“No pain, no gain” is not the right approach when it comes to long-distance running, especially when training for a marathon.

Understand that marathon training places a ton of repeated pounding on your lower extremities. Once something starts to hurt, cut back and consult a doctor.

4. Using a Pre-Determined Amount of Weight

No one knows your body better than you. If an amount of weight you are allotted to lift on a workout chart seems like too much or if you know on the front end that you can’t lift it, then don’t.

Always adjust the weight to your abilities. As Men’s Health puts it, the correct load is “the heaviest weight with which you can do all of your prescribed reps in a set with perfect form.”
